The Dead Milkmen

The Dead Milkmen

The Dead Milkmen Story

Although there are numerous, conflicting, tales of how, when, where, and sometimes why the Dead Milkmen initially formed, the most reliable evidence points to band founder Joe Jack Talcum’s decision, in the late 1970’s, to create a band based entirely upon a group of woodcuts he discovered in the basement of The Vatican. Talcum then recruited acquaintance Rodney Anonymous and the pair immediately set about unlearning everything they had previously learned about music and spending countless hours screaming at inanimate objects.

In 1982 bassist Dave Blood was added to the group when after impressing Talcum and Anonymous with his ability to cover passing vehicles with ketchup. Shortly afterward, and entirely against his own will and better judgment, drummer Dean Clean joined the band.

In 1985, the band, or “The Dead Milkmen” as they were now known, released their debut album “Big Lizard in My Backyard” which was instantly declared “The greatest cultural achievement of our time” (by the band themselves). Big Lizard was followed by “Eat Your Paisley” in 1986 and “Bucky Fellini" in 1987.

The hit single “Punk Rock Girl” from the Dead Milkmen’s 1988 release “Beelzebubba” opened many doors to mainstream success, which the band then purposely set about slamming shut in the faces of anyone who used the term “Market Penetration” in a non-sexual sense. Two years later, the Milkmen followed up “Beelzebubba” with “Metaphysical Graffiti”; a work which is universally regarded as “a CD you can buy if you’ve got roughly eleven dollars”.

Bored and looking to “do something different that didn’t include sacrificing a goat”, the band then began recording “Soul Rotation” (1992). Although critically acclaimed as a brilliant recording (again, by the band themselves), sales were disappointing and the band returned to shoplifting.

1993’s “Not Richard, But Dick” saw the band return to form and to arguing with each other…loudly…mostly in public places …like restaurants, and so the band agreed that 1995’s “Stoney’s Extra Stout (Pig)” would be their final recording unless “some idiot hands us a %$#@load of money to record another CD.” Tragically, for the Milkmen’s bank accounts, the idiot with the money was killed by a polar bear at the Kiev Municipal Zoo.

In March of 2004, bassist Dave Blood decided to fake his own death for artistic reasons. Today he lives in a remote Serbian village with his wives and innumerable offspring. Suffering from the loss of Blood, it appeared that the Milkmen would never reunite, let alone reform, or even band together again.

In 2008 the band reunited, with bassist Dan Stevens on bass, playing the bass, in order to play Austin TX’s Fun Fun Fun Fest (temporarily renamed from “Fun Fun Fun Fun Fest” because “It’ll be a little less fun with the Dead Milkmen there.”)

2011’s release of “The King in Yellow” – the Milkmen’s first release in sixteen years – was at once declared a seamless continuation of their earlier work…in that it’s a CD you can buy if you’ve got roughly eleven dollars.

In the autumn of 2012 the Dead Milkmen began releasing a series of singles on the should-be-by-now-obsolete 7 inch vinyl format in an obvious attempt to appeal to a younger "hipster" audience. Despite mounting evidence that the singles are failing to expand their fan base, the obstinate Milkmen have continued to produce them, with four "sides" already released in the new year, and with no signs of abating, and are selling them via a mail order form on their web site.

Ego Likeness

Ego Likeness

Post Goth Juggernaut created in 1999 by artist Steven Archer and writer Donna Lynch. Taking their name from Frank Herbert’s classic science fiction novel Dune, the band is known for their dark electronic sensibilities while exploring a heavier rock sound. While many may compare them to Curve and Collide, Ego Likeness continues to take their music to darker corners of the human psyche. 2014 will mark their return to The Twisted World.

Live Not On Evil

Live Not On Evil

Live Not On Evil is a musical project that was started in 2000 by lead singer and guitarist Rob Windfelder. In 2001 a debut full length release entitled Lucky Stiff received positive reviews and airplay throughout the world. London-based No Front Teeth Magazine described the band as “dark and heavy rock’n’roll with thick, thick pounding guitars fused with enchanting vocal lines that together bring these songs to a new realm of goth tinged punk rock’n’roll, very atmospheric and very dominant”.

A series of energetic and sometimes unpredictable live shows, along with inclusion on various compilations lead up to the recording and release of the second full length, Next Time Nail it Shut, in the fall of 2004, distributed by Sinister Records out of Seattle. Again this release ran the same course as the first, enjoying much appreciated accolades from many various publications and broadcasters. The band was being accepted and appreciated by a crossover of scenes, a goal of the project since its inception. Gothic Beauty Magazine described their sophomore release as “a fantastic rock album with evil intentions. When the trial run was over I immediately hit play again. In your face with a metal edge, Live Not On Evil have managed to capture their own unique agenda while staying true to the roots of old school style guitar driven horror-punk. Next Time Nail it Shut flat out rocks”.

Live Not On Evil has had the pleasure of sharing bills with bands such as The Briefs, 45 Grave, Dead Kennedys, The Casualties, The Dead Milkmen, Christian Death, and Excene Cervenka just to name a few. The current line-up, Windfelder vocals/guitar, Norm Alger guitar/vocals, Kevin Person Bass, and Joey Patrone on drums has signed with Creep Records out of their own home town of Philadelphia. Their first endeavor with their new label, a seven inch EP entitled “Coming Back to Life”, was released on Halloween Night 2009.

September 13th, 2013 marked the release of the band's 3rd full length album "When Everything Goes Down", Intravenous Magazine out of London described the album this way, "This is honest, gritty, driving and riff orientated rock infused with punk attitude and gothic sheen. The band's latest full length offering, 'When Everything Goes Down', sees the band drop full-throttle riffs, throbbing bass lines and thundering drums in the blender, and the result is pretty infectious".

“Like snuff with a more serious focus, they all but thrash with variety, clarity, and brutish timing. I hope this ensures they’re on the map, so they go on to leave a fine legacy”. (Rock Historian Mick Mercer)

The Pirate Crew of the Dead Rabbit

The Pirate Crew of the Dead Rabbit

The Pirate Crew of the Dead Rabbit is an immersive theatre troupe specialising in vaudeville, improv, and crime. What is 'immersive theatre', you ask? Well, it's sort of like Imax Cinema, except instead of having to wear 3D glasses to pretend you're part of the story, the action actually comes to you. Notable for on-the-fly story-telling, flash-mob entertainment and hanging a man inside of the Madison Marriott Hotel (don't worry, he deserved it), the Pirate Crew of the Dead Rabbit is a prime example of what happens when a gaggle of urchins who grew up listening to punk rock and watching Indiana Jones movies decide they want to become professional entertainers. The Rabbits have performed in a soiree of locales more diverse than the wretched flavours of villainy at Mos Eisley Spaceport, including TeslaCon, Watch City Festival, the streets of Chicago and Boston, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland and on stage for the Girl Scouts of America.

Their mission is simple - remind the masses that adventure is out there and sometimes a black flag is needed when a white one will not suffice. Their message is one of defiance and curiosity, of entertainment and the drinking class. Vaudeville! Improv! Crime! Captained by James Lovelock and crewed by so-called 'artists' and 'professionals', the Dead Rabbits are tangible proof that all hope for the human race is truly lost.

Short Stack

Short Stack

Short Stack started doing stand up at age 19. Bouts of laziness made it so she only started taking it seriously at age 24, but plenty of time was spent fine-tuning her funny stuff in the process. She now co-hosts Comedy is Liberty Wednesdays at Liberties Tavern in Philadelphia and chases the gig dragon.
